This month’s Birds & Beers will be on April 25th at Solemn Oath Brewery in Chicago starting at 6:30 pm. Activities will include discussing where to look for birds, exchanging observations about birds you've seen already this spring, and general discourse about how migration season is upon us! There's no food on site but you can bring your own, so plan accordingly.

Montrose Dunes is a birding hotspot that hosted the now infamous “Monty and Rose,” but it also hosts a collection of state threatened and endangered plant species. Lots of work has been put into creating and maintaining this unique urban habitat. On these workdays, you’ll be led by Mark Kolasa, Volunteer Community Steward - Montrose Beach Dunes, to help maintain this gem on Chicago’s lakefront.

On this evening walk, we’ll hear from steward Eileen Sutter and BCN bird monitor Kat O’Reilly about the restoration of this interesting wet prairie and shrubland. Then we’ll listen and hopefully watch the thrilling sky dance of the woodcock.

Chicago Bird Alliance has hosted walks at Wooded Island in Jackson Park for 50 years!

Our trip leaders will speak about the history and evolution of these birding events prior to the walk, and we will have a ceremonial wreath toss on the north bridge to remember those who have walked the island over the years. Come celebrate with us!

Join us for a Saturday morning bird walk in the Hyde Park neighborhood’s “under-birded” Washington Park!

Designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Washington Park contains 35.7 acres of prairie, wetlands and lagoons. Its many habitat types attract a wide variety of bird species.

While most bird lovers don’t associate March with spring migration, a unique and underappreciated suite of bird species can be seen starting to migrate. Given the right conditions spectacular movements of robins, blackbirds, geese, and cranes may be seen, sometimes numbering in the thousands.

Unlike with the warblers of peak spring, the migrants in March are often seen actively migrating in the hours after sunrise. With a smaller number of species to worry about, this makes for an ideal opportunity to start learning how to identify birds in flight.

Watching birds actively migrate, known as “visual migration” or “vis-mig,” is a type of birding that has grown in popularity in recent times. Chicagoland offers a great opportunity to see this phenomenon, but identifying birds in flight can be daunting. Join local birder Woody Goss as he tries to clarify some of the murkiness surrounding flying birds and unveils a novel approach to learning songbird flight using audio and video.

Join CBA for a bird outing at the start of spring migration with an expert birder and conservationist!

On this outing, we will take a leisurely journey through a great birding hotspot. We’ll search for year-round residents and recent spring migrants. Trails can be muddy, so boots are a good idea. Registration is required and capped at 12 individuals.

In conjunction with Cook County Forest Preserves, CAS coordinates an extensive restoration project at Camp Pine Woods, an area prime for woodland and shrub prairie birds including summer nesters and seasonal migrants.

Workday activities may include cutting and burning buckthorn, removing other invasives, or seed harvesting. Waterproof shoes/boots are recommended, as well as work gloves and protective eyewear (gloves and eyewear will be available for those who need them).

The Newberry Library is exhibiting a book that sent us on a journey, meeting local indigenous organizations and learning about our shared history.
