Wooded Island Bird Walk

  • Wooded Island, Jackson Park Meet at the west side of the Columbia Basin Chicago, IL, 60637 United States (map)

Hello everyone,

I’m happy to report that our resident Black-crowned Night Heron, Osaka, was present in the garden this week, perched in a different tree than usual, and we were happy to see it.

Once again, we had two Spotted Sandpipers on the lily pads in the Columbia Basin. Lots of American Goldfinches were flying about, and our official count of 15 is probably an undercount. We also had a flock of hummingbirds in the meadow which was pretty interesting. An Eastern Kingbird caught a very large cicada and kept whacking the insect on the branch of a bush in preparation to feed the unfortunate cicada to the hungry juvenile waiting impatiently by its side.

The most exciting sighting of the day was of three Cooper’s Hawks near the south bridge. They were young birds, and they spent a lot of time vocalizing to one another and flying around like they were playing. They were great fun to watch.
