Located on the eastern bank of the Des Plaines River, Thatcher Woods has miles of unpaved walking trails through woodlands and floodplain forest.
Birding highlights are spring and fall migration as birds migrate along the Des Plaines River Valley.
The lagoon south of Chicago Avenue often attracts great blue herons, and trails around here to the river are great for migrants and residents. There is a bird feeder along the path in the gated section near the Trailside Museum which always has some local visitors.
Another good spot for catching migrating land birds is on the north side of Chicago Ave. Check out the perimeter of the open area, especially on the south end where the woods meet the open area.
Best time to visit: Migration seasons in general and the height of Warbler migration around Mother’s Day

Parking - 2 Parking Lots, both with entrances off Chicago Ave. west of Thatcher Ave. One is North of Chicago Avenue, and provides access to the large mowed open field, 2 picnic groves, and a beautiful pavilion for private events. There are many rustic trails - the main one can be found to the east of the pavilion, it meets up with the main river trail that follows the Des Plaines river to North Avenue.
Public Transportation: Trailside Museum is located 1/2 mile north of River Forest Metra station
Other Amenities: Visitors to the Hal Tyrrell Trailside Museum of Natural History will discover displays of live native animals, colorful wildflower gardens, information about local wildlife and their habitats, and more.
