Additional Bird Safety Information

Continuing our efforts to supply our readers with bird safety information specifically related to the problem of birds pecking at windows, we hope the following will also be helpful. Birds will often mistake their own reflection for another bird and this causes problems that can sometimes be alleviated by very simple solutions. If the bird is pecking at patio windows, try moving outdoor potted plants, furniture, statues, etc. up against the glass or try soaping the window or even using a water-based paint directly on the glass. Collidescape static cling film (discussed in the May/June issue) is another possible solution, and now a new product from Window Alert called “Cardinal Alert” is another possibility. This is an attractive decal strip that can be applied to the lower area of a window or door. The frosted coating of the decal strip prevents territorial birds from seeing their own reflections as they perch nearby at the same eye level as the decal. “Cardinal Alert” can be purchased at local stores that sell wild bird products or from directly from Window Alert--phone: 800-733-2753. If you need additional copies of our May/June issue which covered additional options, please call the Chicago Audubon office at 773-539-6793.
