Birding Field Trip. Bald Eagle Sighting.

February 24, 2007.

One-Day Trip. During the winter, more bald eagles can be seen along the Mississippi River in Illinois than anywhere south of Alaska. Hundreds of eagles spend the winter feeding around the locks, dams, and other open water areas of the Mississippi River and roosting in the bluff areas around the river. At the Lost Mound National Wildlife Research Center, anywhere from 20 to 200 eagles may be spotted during the winter. In addition to eagles, expect to see resident birds, possibly including wild turkeys and horned larks, as wells as ducks and others. After spending most of the day at the Depot, the group will check for eagles along the Fulton Dam, a bit to the south. Bring water, lunch and snacks for the day because no restaurant stops will be made. Also bring binoculars, a field guide, spotting scope (if you have one), and dress for the weather (layered clothes are best). The drive to Savanna takes just over three hours, and transportation via coach bus is provided and is required. This trip sells out quickly, so register early to reserve your place. Fee is reduced for both Chicago Botanic Garden and Chicago Audubon Society members. For registration, please call the Chicago Botanic Garden's school at (847) 835-8261. Press 1 as soon as the recorded greeting begins. This will put you directly into the Registrar's office. Ask to register for the Bald Eagle Trip, which is their Course #SPP0031. The cost is $99 for Chicago Audubon Society members and for Chicago Botanic Garden members. The cost for non-members of either organization is $119.00. Again, call early. Space is limited. Trip leader: Chris Van Wassenhove, e-mail: cmvw@gmail.com.
