Governor Blagojevich Announces Nearly $20 Million for Parks Across Illinois
On January 27, Governor Rod R. Blagojevich announced nearly $20 million in grants for 58 park projects in Illinois. These projects are being funded statewide through the Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program facilitated through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). “Being able to enjoy the great outdoors – especially in a beautiful state like Illinois – is key to our quality of life. Through the grants we’re announcing today, residents throughout Illinois will have even more opportunities for recreation and tourism,” said Gov. Blagojevich. “New parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields will not only add to the quality of life in our communities, but can also spur more economic growth.” “The continued effort to broaden the scope of recreation in Illinois is essential, not only for tourism and economic growth to the state’s communities but also for the health of our children,” IDNR Acting Director Sam Flood said. The Chicago Park District will receive $1,055,000 to acquire 0.47 acres on West Fullerton adjacent to existing Haas Park. Future development at this site will include a soccer field and new playground. The City of Chicago will receive $988,100 to redevelop two existing park sites and school grounds to create a new four acre park on Western Avenue and Monroe Street. There will be a playground, multi-use athletic field, pathway, landscaping and a parking area. |
